The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 17%. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, lysine exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +89.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 47%. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
China dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 58% of total exports in 2022. The United States (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Indonesia (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and South Korea (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 30% share of total exports. The following exporters - Brazil (X tons) and France (X tons) - each amounted to a 5.4% share of total exports.
China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the lysine and its esters, and salts thereof exports, with a CAGR of +18.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Korea (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. The Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the United States (-5.0%), Indonesia (-5.3%), Brazil (-9.8%) and France (-48.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+42 p.p.) and France (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Korea (-2.4 p.p.), the Netherlands (-4.3 p.p.), Brazil (-9.5 p.p.), Indonesia (-12.6 p.p.) and the United States (-13.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest lysine supplier worldwide, comprising 55% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with an 8.2% share of global exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with an 8.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China stood at +14.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (-6.5% per year) and the Netherlands (-2.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average lysine export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 30% against the previous year. The global export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+32.3%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Global lysine imports reached X tons in 2022, surging by 6.5% on 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 11%. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, lysine imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +72.1% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, global imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

The Netherlands (X tons) and Spain (X tons) represented roughly 17% of total imports in 2022. India (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Germany (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 9.5% share of total imports. South Korea (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), France (X tons), Poland (X tons), Italy (X tons), Russia (X tons), Canada (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Mexico (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by South Korea (with a CAGR of +13.4%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest lysine importing markets worldwide were the Netherlands ($X), Spain ($X) and Germany ($X), together accounting for 22% of global imports. India, Poland, France, Italy, Canada, Mexico, Vietnam, Thailand, Russia and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.
Among the main importing countries, India, with a CAGR of +8.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average lysine import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
