The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, preserved mackerel exports contracted to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 19%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the global exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
China was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 48% of total exports. Thailand (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 9.1% share, followed by Vietnam (6.9%) and Morocco (5.9%). The following exporters - Portugal (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Latvia (X tons), Poland (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Ecuador (X tons) - together made up 16% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to preserved mackerel exports from China stood at +6.4%. At the same time, Ecuador (+31.9%), the Netherlands (+27.2%), Poland (+22.6%), Vietnam (+9.9%) and Latvia (+8.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ecuador emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +31.9% from 2012-2021. Portugal and Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Denmark (-3.6%) and Thailand (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+17 p.p.), Vietnam (+3.6 p.p.) and Poland (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2021, the share of Denmark (-2.3 p.p.) and Thailand (-9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest preserved mackerel supplier worldwide, comprising 32% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with an 8.7% share of global exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with an 8.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China stood at +4.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (-3.1% per year) and Vietnam (+11.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average preserved mackerel export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The global export price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Global preserved mackerel imports declined to X tons in 2021, with a decrease of -8.5% compared with the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of global imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, preserved mackerel imports dropped to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 32%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of global imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Japan (X tons), followed by Ghana (X tons), the United States (X tons), Jamaica (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) represented the largest importers of mackerel (prepared or preserved), together creating 38% of total imports. Italy (X tons), Sri Lanka (X tons), Haiti (X tons), France (X tons), Yemen (X tons), the UK (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Spain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Haiti (with a CAGR of +27.8%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Japan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mackerel (prepared or preserved) worldwide, comprising 20% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 6.8% share of global imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 6.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Japan stood at +5.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Italy (-2.0% per year) and the United States (+1.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average preserved mackerel import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 3.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 6.5%. Global import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
