In 2021, the global magnesite market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2014, thus ending a six-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, saw a mild slump. Global consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Global magnesite exports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, jumping by 73% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 145% against the previous year. The global exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, magnesite exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. The global exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

China prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 75% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), making up a 5.6% share of total exports. From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to magnesite exports from China stood at +192.3%. At the same time, Finland (+294.2%), Spain (+56.4%), Australia (+41.1%), Slovakia (+37.4%), Pakistan (+30.2%) and Turkey (+12.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +294.2% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China, Finland and Spain increased by +75, +3.5 and +2.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X), Spain ($X) and Turkey ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 59% share of global exports. These countries were followed by Australia, Slovakia, Pakistan and Finland, which together accounted for a further 14%.

Finland, with a CAGR of +150.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average magnesite export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -20.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price faced a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 14%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Global magnesite imports surged to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 97% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, imports showed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 122%. Over the period under review, global imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, magnesite imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a resilient expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Japan (X tons) was the key importer of magnesite, making up 48% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), India (X tons) and Greece (X tons), together creating a 31% share of total imports. The following importers - the United States (X tons), China (X tons) and Poland (X tons) - together made up 8% of total imports.

Japan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the magnesite imports, with a CAGR of +86.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, China (+52.5%), India (+39.4%), Poland (+32.2%), Indonesia (+22.7%), Greece (+15.6%) and the United States (+8.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Japan, India, Indonesia and China increased by +47, +8.4, +7.3 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported magnesite worldwide, comprising 30% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 13% share of global imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 5.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Indonesia stood at +16.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (+49.9% per year) and the United States (+2.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average magnesite import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -10% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 4.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Japan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
