Maize Market Size

The global maize market fell modestly to $X in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the market value increased by 7.3%. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the global market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, maize production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2019 to 2022, global production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The United States (X tons) remains the largest maize producing country worldwide, comprising approx. 21% of total volume. Moreover, maize production in the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Croatia (X tons), twofold. Mexico (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with an 8% share.

The global average maize yield contracted modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, remaining stable against 2021. In general, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 9.7%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the average maize yield failed to regain momentum. Overall, the harvested area, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 4.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to maize production reached the maximum at X ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the amount of maize (green) exported worldwide stood at X tons, increasing by 3.7% against 2021. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 31% against the previous year. The global exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, maize exports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +98.4% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 22% against the previous year. The global exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In 2022, Mexico (X tons), China (X tons), Italy (X tons), Iran (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), the United States (X tons), India (X tons) and Spain (X tons) represented the key exporter of maize (green) in the world, achieving 67% of total export. France (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Honduras (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Ethiopia (with a CAGR of +67.8%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest maize supplying countries worldwide were Italy ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 39% share of global exports. Mexico, Ethiopia, the United States, Spain, France, India, Honduras, Thailand, Iran and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Ethiopia, with a CAGR of +84.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average maize export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -2% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 13%. The global export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ethiopia ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+15.0%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 12% against the previous year. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, maize imports declined to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 14%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, leveling off in the following year.

In 2022, the United States (X tons), distantly followed by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), France (X tons), Germany (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Canada (X tons) represented the largest importers of maize (green), together comprising 60% of total imports. The following importers - the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Somalia (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - together made up 16% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +17.2%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and Germany ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 31% of global imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Hong Kong SAR, with a CAGR of +30.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average maize import price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -2.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 7.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Somalia ($X per ton), while the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+16.9%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
