Malt Market Size

In 2022, after four years of growth, there was decline in the global malt market, when its value decreased by -0.8% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the market value increased by 4.6% against the previous year. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, leveling off in the following year.

Malt Production

In value terms, malt production dropped modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production attained the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, global malt exports stood at X tons, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021 figures. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 3.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, malt exports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The biggest shipments were from Australia (X tons), France (X tons) and Belgium (X tons), together resulting at 40% of total export. Germany (X tons) took a 7.9% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Canada (6%), Argentina (6%), China (4.8%) and Uruguay (4.6%). The Netherlands (X tons), the United States (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Russia (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +35.1%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest malt supplying countries worldwide were Belgium ($X), France ($X) and Australia ($X), with a combined 36% share of global exports. Germany, Canada, Argentina, China, the Netherlands, the United States, Uruguay, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 47%.

Russia, with a CAGR of +27.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average malt export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The global export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while Australia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+1.0%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

After six years of growth, supplies from abroad of malt decreased by -6% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 8% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, malt imports rose slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 7.4% against the previous year. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Brazil (X tons), followed by Vietnam (X tons), Japan (X tons), Mexico (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) represented the key importers of malt, together achieving 36% of total imports. The United States (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Poland (X tons), Italy (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Germany (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The average malt import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 11% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
