Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 27%. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, marble and travertine exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Turkey represented the main exporter of marble and travertine in the world, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 43% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Italy (X tons), Portugal (X tons), Greece (X tons) and Iran (X tons), together mixing up a 30% share of total exports. Spain (X tons), India (X tons), Pakistan (X tons), Togo (X tons) and North Macedonia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to marble and travertine exports from Turkey stood at -2.3%. At the same time, North Macedonia (+16.8%), Portugal (+4.4%), Greece (+3.5%) and India (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, North Macedonia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +16.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Pakistan (-1.6%), Iran (-2.5%), Togo (-3.3%), Italy (-4.0%) and Spain (-15.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Portugal, Greece, Togo and North Macedonia increased by +3.6, +3.2, +2.3 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest marble and travertine supplier worldwide, comprising 37% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with an 18% share of global exports. It was followed by Greece, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey amounted to -1.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Italy (-0.3% per year) and Greece (+6.5% per year).

In 2021, the average marble and travertine export price amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 3.9% against the previous year. The global export price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Over the period under review, global imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to marble and travertine imports into China stood at -3.3%. At the same time, Egypt (+20.0%), Algeria (+6.0%) and India (+5.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +20.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Italy (-1.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of India (+5.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2021, the share of China (-5.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported marble and travertine worldwide, comprising 68% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with an 8.7% share of global imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 4% share.
