Matches Market Size

The global matches market was estimated at $X in 2021, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the global market failed to regain momentum.

Matches Production

In value terms, matches production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 2.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production reached the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the amount of matches exported worldwide expanded significantly to X tons, surging by 6.3% against 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, saw a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 6.5% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the global exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, matches exports totaled $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a pronounced shrinkage. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

India dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 55% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Sweden (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Pakistan (X tons), together achieving a 19% share of total exports. The following exporters - South Africa (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Kenya (X tons), China (X tons) and Guatemala (X tons) - together made up 12% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to matches exports from India stood at +4.1%. At the same time, Kenya (+54.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kenya emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +54.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Brazil (-1.4%), Guatemala (-1.6%), Sweden (-2.8%), China (-5.1%), Indonesia (-7.2%), Pakistan (-8.9%) and South Africa (-9.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+25 p.p.) and Kenya (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while South Africa, Indonesia and Pakistan saw its share reduced by -3%, -3.3% and -4.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest matches supplier worldwide, comprising 37% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sweden ($X), with a 17% share of global exports. It was followed by Pakistan, with a 6.3% share.

In India, matches exports increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sweden (-2.1% per year) and Pakistan (-9.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average matches export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 5.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight reduction. The global export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+7.3%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of matches were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, showed a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 5.9% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of global imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, matches imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced setback. Global imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons), followed by Angola (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Sudan (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) represented the largest importers of matches, together generating 28% of total imports. The United States (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Benin (X tons), Romania (X tons), Afghanistan (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by South Africa (with a CAGR of +22.9%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Germany ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 17% of global imports. Angola, Sudan, Tanzania, Ghana, Afghanistan, Romania, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Benin, Azerbaijan and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.

Azerbaijan, with a CAGR of +19.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average matches import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 9.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+20.9%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
