In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of millet, when their volume decreased by -12.3% to X tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 32% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, millet exports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. In general, total exports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +65.9% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 42%. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

India (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Russia (X tons), the United States (X tons) and France (X tons) represented roughly 71% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), generating a 4.6% share of total exports. Mali (X tons), Poland (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons), Canada (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Austria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +75.6%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, India ($X), the United States ($X) and Ukraine ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 47% of global exports. France, Russia, Uzbekistan, Turkey, Poland, Austria, Canada, Mali and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Turkey, with a CAGR of +63.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average millet export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 19%. The global export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+17.4%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Over the period under review, total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 31%. Global imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In 2022, Pakistan (X tons), followed by Indonesia (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the largest importers of millet, together making up 32% of total imports. The following importers - the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Nepal (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Iraq (X tons), the UK (X tons), Canada (X tons), Spain (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) - together made up 30% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Iraq (with a CAGR of +39.5%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest millet importing markets worldwide were Indonesia ($X), Germany ($X) and Belgium ($X), together comprising 23% of global imports. Canada, the UK, the Philippines, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, Nepal and Iraq lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

Iraq, with a CAGR of +45.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average millet import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
