In 2022, overseas shipments of molasses (excluding cane molasses) decreased by -1% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 26%. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-cane molasses exports rose slightly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 14%. The global exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Russia was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 28% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), Poland (X tons), Germany (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons), together creating a 44% share of total exports. The following exporters - Belgium (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Latvia (X tons), Serbia (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - together made up 15% of total exports.

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of molasses (excluding cane molasses). At the same time, Latvia (+105.1%), Austria (+27.9%), Belarus (+25.7%), Belgium (+17.5%), Poland (+4.9%), Egypt (+4.7%) and Slovakia (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Latvia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +105.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the Netherlands (-1.4%), Germany (-3.3%), Serbia (-4.1%) and Ukraine (-17.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Belarus (+11 p.p.), Poland (+3.9 p.p.), Belgium (+3 p.p.), Egypt (+2.6 p.p.), Latvia (+2.5 p.p.) and Austria (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Germany and Ukraine saw its share reduced by -3.4% and -15.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest non-cane molasses supplying countries worldwide were Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and Germany ($X), together comprising 43% of global exports. Belarus, Egypt, the Netherlands, Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Serbia, Latvia and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.

Among the main exporting countries, Latvia, with a CAGR of +90.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average non-cane molasses export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 4.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 13%. Global imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-cane molasses imports surged to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Turkey (X tons), distantly followed by Hungary (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Italy (X tons), the UK (X tons), France (X tons) and Canada (X tons) represented the key importers of molasses (excluding cane molasses), together committing 55% of total imports. The Netherlands (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Latvia (X tons), Portugal (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Germany (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average non-cane molasses import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
