The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

China (X tons) and Peru (X tons) represented roughly 31% of total exports in 2021. Indonesia (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by India (X tons), Spain (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Argentina (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons). From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +20.0%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest molluscs supplier worldwide, comprising 24% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 9.9% share of global exports. It was followed by Spain, with an 8.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China amounted to +4.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+9.7% per year) and Spain (+7.9% per year).

In 2021, the average molluscs export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 5.4% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, China (X tons), distantly followed by Spain (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Italy (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Japan (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the major importers of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus), together mixing up 75% of total imports.
