In value terms, motor vehicle engine exports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 11% against the previous year. In 2021, Japan (X tons), followed by the United States (X tons), Germany (X tons), Hungary (X tons), South Korea (X tons), France (X tons), China (X tons), Mexico (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the key exporters of motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition), together generating 77% of total exports. Canada (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Spain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In 2021, the average motor vehicle engine export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 3.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 4.4%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Japan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Global motor vehicle engine imports amounted to X tons in 2021, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, imports, however, saw a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 8.9% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, motor vehicle engine imports rose modestly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 8.6% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of global imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the United States (X tons), distantly followed by Canada (X tons), Germany (X tons), Russia (X tons), Mexico (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Spain (X tons) represented the key importers of motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition), together making up 61% of total imports. China (X tons), Italy (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to motor vehicle engine imports into the United States stood at -3.9%. At the same time, Italy (+27.8%), Hungary (+13.1%), Turkey (+13.1%), Brazil (+2.9%), Spain (+2.6%) and Slovakia (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Italy emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +27.8% from 2012-2021. The Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mexico (-2.8%), Russia (-4.7%), Germany (-5.2%), Canada (-7.7%) and China (-9.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey, Italy and Spain increased by +4.5, +2.5 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United States ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition) worldwide, comprising 25% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Canada ($X), with a 9.1% share of global imports. It was followed by Germany, with an 8.4% share.
In the United States, motor vehicle engine imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Canada (-3.8% per year) and Germany (-5.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average motor vehicle engine import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 4.6% against the previous year.
