In 2022, overseas shipments of naphthalene and other aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures decreased by -8.5% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +75.2% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 41%. The global exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, Yemen (X tons), distantly followed by India (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) were the largest exporters of naphthalene and other aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures, together committing 56% of total exports. The UK (X tons), Japan (X tons), Thailand (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Spain (X tons), France (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures exports from Yemen stood at +34.1%. At the same time, Turkey (+186.7%), India (+54.1%), Malaysia (+49.2%), Japan (+14.8%), Tunisia (+11.2%), the UK (+8.5%) and South Korea (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +186.7% from 2012-2022. Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-1.0%), Spain (-2.7%), the Netherlands (-4.5%) and Thailand (-5.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Yemen (+19 p.p.), India (+8.8 p.p.), Turkey (+6.1 p.p.), Malaysia (+5.4 p.p.), Japan (+2.6 p.p.) and the UK (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Germany, Spain, Thailand and the Netherlands saw its share reduced by -1.9%, -2%, -4.2% and -10% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures supplying countries worldwide were Yemen ($X), India ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together accounting for 35% of global exports. Turkey, Germany, the UK, Tunisia, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea, France and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +161.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 35% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 40%. The global export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of naphthalene and other aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures, when their volume decreased by -13.4% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures imports totaled $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 42%. Global imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) represented the largest importer of naphthalene and other aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures, making up 34% of total imports. Ecuador (X tons) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (12%) and Belgium (10%). The United States (X tons), India (X tons), Germany (X tons), Singapore (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into China increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Malaysia (+34.4%), Singapore (+23.7%), South Korea (+13.7%), India (+10.4%), Belgium (+9.8%), the United Arab Emirates (+8.7%), the United States (+7.1%), Ecuador (+2.7%) and Germany (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malaysia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +34.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the Netherlands (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Belgium (+5.8 p.p.), Ecuador (+2.5 p.p.), China (+2.5 p.p.), Singapore (+2.2 p.p.), Malaysia (+2 p.p.), South Korea (+1.6 p.p.), the United States (+1.6 p.p.) and India (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while the Netherlands saw its share reduced by -12.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures importing markets worldwide were China ($X), Ecuador ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 56% share of global imports. Belgium, the United States, India, Germany, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

Among the main importing countries, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +26.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a noticeable reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 38% against the previous year. Global import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
