In 2021, the global natural cork market decreased by -7.2% to $X, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 3.9% against the previous year. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 135%. The global exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, natural cork exports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 90% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Spain prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 85% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), generating a 6.9% share of total exports. Italy (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Spain experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of natural cork debacked or roughly squared. At the same time, Poland (+46.2%) and Italy (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. The average natural cork export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -14.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 29%. The global export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Overall, total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +77.6% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 44%. Global imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

The purchases of the three major importers of natural cork debacked or roughly squared, namely Slovakia, Spain and Portugal, represented more than two-thirds of total import. The Czech Republic (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Poland (X tons). All these countries together took near 9.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +48.9%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Portugal ($X), Slovakia ($X) and Spain ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 71% share of global imports. These countries were followed by Poland and the Czech Republic, which together accounted for a further 8.8%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +41.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average natural cork import price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -3.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 12%. Global import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
