Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 7.7%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, nitrates imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a modest increase. Global imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

South Africa (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the major importers of nitrates (excluding those of potassium) in 2021, accounting for near 11% and 11% of total imports, respectively. France (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 7.3% share, followed by Australia (5.1%), Germany (4.8%) and Malaysia (4.7%). In value terms, the largest nitrates importing markets worldwide were Japan ($X), the United States ($X) and South Korea ($X), together comprising 18% of global imports. These countries were followed by South Africa, France, Germany, Australia, Canada, Spain, Malaysia, Italy, the UK and Chile, which together accounted for a further 36%.
