As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Belgium was the main exporter of nitrogen in the world, with the volume of exports resulting at X cubic meters, which was approx. 41% of total exports in 2021. Germany (X cubic meters) held a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the United States (9.7%) and France (7.1%). Poland (X cubic meters), Austria (X cubic meters), the Czech Republic (X cubic meters), Singapore (X cubic meters) and Italy (X cubic meters) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Belgium was also the fastest-growing in terms of the nitrogen exports, with a CAGR of +25.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Austria (+10.1%), the United States (+8.6%), Italy (+6.5%), Germany (+6.0%), France (+3.4%) and Poland (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-1.0%) and Singapore (-9.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Belgium increased by +31 percentage points. Austria, with a CAGR of +16.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average nitrogen export price stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, rising by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a deep reduction. The global export price peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per cubic meter), while Belgium ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

In value terms, nitrogen imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Netherlands (X cubic meters), distantly followed by Germany (X cubic meters), Canada (X cubic meters), Belgium (X cubic meters) and Slovakia (X cubic meters) were the largest importers of nitrogen, together achieving 54% of total imports. Singapore (X cubic meters), Hungary (X cubic meters), the Czech Republic (X cubic meters), France (X cubic meters), Malaysia (X cubic meters), Luxembourg (X cubic meters), Slovenia (X cubic meters) and Greece (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +29.2%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported nitrogen worldwide, comprising 21% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with an 8.8% share of global imports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 4.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Netherlands amounted to +3.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (-1.9% per year) and Belgium (-0.7% per year).

The average nitrogen import price stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, falling by -7.7% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%.
