In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of nonwoven fabrics, when their volume decreased by -7.2% to X tons. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, nonwoven fabric exports reduced to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
Exports by Country
China represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 28% of total exports. Germany (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 8.2% share, followed by Italy (6.6%), Turkey (6.5%), the United States (6.1%) and the Netherlands (4.6%). The Czech Republic (X tons), France (X tons), Spain (X tons), Israel (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Japan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to nonwoven fabric exports from China stood at +9.6%. At the same time, Turkey (+12.8%), Poland (+12.5%), the Netherlands (+11.9%), Thailand (+8.6%), Japan (+5.3%), Israel (+4.7%), the Czech Republic (+2.3%), Spain (+1.8%) and Italy (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +12.8% from 2012-2022. Germany and France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the United States (-2.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+11 p.p.), Turkey (+3.6 p.p.) and the Netherlands (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of France (-1.7 p.p.), Italy (-2.3 p.p.), Germany (-3.5 p.p.) and the United States (-5.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest nonwoven fabric supplying countries worldwide were China ($X), Germany ($X) and the United States ($X), together comprising 44% of global exports. Italy, Japan, Turkey, France, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Spain, Israel, Poland and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.
Poland, with a CAGR of +12.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average nonwoven fabric export price amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 4.8%. The global export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+3.3%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

After ten years of growth, purchases abroad of nonwoven fabrics decreased by -9.6% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +87.3% against 2012 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, nonwoven fabric imports reduced to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, global imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
Imports by Country
The United States represented the main importer of nonwoven fabrics in the world, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 29% of total imports in 2022. Germany (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Japan (X tons). All these countries together took near 10% share of total imports. The following importers - Poland (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Mexico (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), France (X tons), the UK (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Canada (X tons) and Italy (X tons) - together made up 25% of total imports.
The United States was also the fastest-growing in terms of the nonwoven fabrics imports, with a CAGR of +22.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Korea (+10.8%), Vietnam (+7.1%), Japan (+6.8%), the Czech Republic (+5.2%), Italy (+4.5%), Mexico (+4.3%), Poland (+4.3%), the Netherlands (+3.5%), Germany (+2.5%) and France (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Canada experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the UK (-1.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United States (+22 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of Canada (-1.6 p.p.), Germany (-2.4 p.p.) and the UK (-2.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United States ($X), Germany ($X) and Japan ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 20% share of global imports. These countries were followed by Mexico, Poland, Italy, the UK, Vietnam, Canada, France, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and South Korea, which together accounted for a further 33%.
Among the main importing countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +9.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average nonwoven fabric import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 2.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 3.2%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+3.4%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
