Exports by Country
China represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 50% of total exports. Mexico (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by France (X tons). All these countries together held near 18% share of total exports. The following exporters - the United States (X tons), Poland (X tons), Japan (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Germany (X tons) - together made up 14% of total exports.
Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +17.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Romania (+36.0%), Mexico (+21.0%), Hong Kong SAR (+20.2%), Poland (+14.2%), France (+8.3%) and Japan (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +36.0% from 2012-2022. Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Korea (-5.4%) and the United States (-8.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of China and Mexico increased by +25 and +8.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest optical fiber cables supplying countries worldwide were China ($X), the United States ($X) and Mexico ($X), together accounting for 56% of global exports. France, Poland, Japan, Germany, Hong Kong SAR, Romania and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +33.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average optical fiber cables export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 6.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 12%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+15.1%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the third year in a row, the global market recorded growth in purchases abroad of optical fiber cables, which increased by 5% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, optical fiber cables imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 32%. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Mexico (X tons), Canada (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) represented roughly 34% of total imports in 2022. France (X tons), Ireland (X tons), the UK (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Germany (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Chile (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ireland (with a CAGR of +49.3%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Mexico ($X), Canada ($X) and the UK ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 21% of global imports. These countries were followed by France, Germany, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brazil, Hong Kong SAR, Indonesia, Chile and Ireland, which together accounted for a further 21%.
Among the main importing countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +26.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average optical fiber cables import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 15% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Global import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while Ireland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+6.2%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
