Papaya Market Size

The global papaya market dropped modestly to $X in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The country with the largest volume of papaya production was India (X tons), accounting for 40% of total volume. Moreover, papaya production in India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Brazil (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Mexico (X tons), with a 7.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in India was relatively modest. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Brazil (-2.0% per year) and Mexico (+4.7% per year).

In 2022, the global average yield of papayas expanded slightly to X tons per ha, growing by 1.7% compared with the previous year. Overall, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 3.1%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the average papaya yield failed to regain momentum. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +57.2% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 33%. The global exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, papaya exports fell slightly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 13%. The global exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Mexico (X tons) was the key exporter of papayas, committing 51% of total exports. Guatemala (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Brazil (10%). Sri Lanka (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), the United States (X tons), India (X tons), China (X tons) and Spain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to papaya exports from Mexico stood at +6.4%. At the same time, Sri Lanka (+18.4%), Spain (+13.8%), Guatemala (+8.6%), China (+6.4%) and Brazil (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sri Lanka emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +18.4% from 2012-2022. The United States experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Malaysia (-3.3%) and India (-5.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mexico (+7.6 p.p.), Guatemala (+4 p.p.) and Sri Lanka (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of the United States (-1.5 p.p.), India (-4 p.p.) and Malaysia (-4.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest papaya supplier worldwide, comprising 39% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with a 15% share of global exports. It was followed by Guatemala, with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mexico amounted to +7.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Brazil (+3.2% per year) and Guatemala (+11.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average papaya export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -2.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 13%. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 13%. Global imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

The United States dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 57% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), Canada (X tons) and El Salvador (X tons), together creating a 15% share of total imports. The following importers - the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Portugal (X tons), Germany (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Spain (X tons) - together made up 14% of total imports.

Imports into the United States increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Africa (+35.9%), the United Arab Emirates (+12.2%), Portugal (+10.1%), El Salvador (+6.9%), Germany (+4.0%), Canada (+2.6%) and Spain (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +35.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Singapore (-4.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa, the United States and the United Arab Emirates increased by +2.3, +2.2 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported papayas worldwide, comprising 38% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Portugal ($X), with an 8.4% share of global imports. It was followed by Germany, with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the United States totaled +3.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Portugal (+10.2% per year) and Germany (+3.3% per year).
