In value terms, passenger car exports rose significantly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The global exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The shipments of the twelve major exporters of passenger cars, namely Japan, Germany, China, South Korea, the United States, Spain, Belgium, Canada, France, the Czech Republic, India and Slovakia, represented more than two-thirds of total export. The UK (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +11.8%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest passenger car supplying countries worldwide were Germany ($X), Japan ($X) and the United States ($X), together accounting for 40% of global exports. These countries were followed by South Korea, Spain, Belgium, the UK, Canada, Slovakia, China, the Czech Republic, France and India, which together accounted for a further 37%.

Among the main exporting countries, China, with a CAGR of +19.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average passenger car export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 4% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +9.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, passenger car export price decreased by -1.9% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 77%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while India ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 9.1%. Over the period under review, global imports attained the maximum at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, passenger car imports reached $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the United States (X units) and Pakistan (X units) represented the major importers of passenger carsin the world, together constituting 28% of total imports. Germany (X units) took the next position in the ranking, followed by France (X units) and Belgium (X units). All these countries together held near 16% share of total imports. Italy (X units), Spain (X units), the UK (X units), Canada (X units), China (X units), Australia (X units), the Netherlands (X units) and Ukraine (X units) took a minor share of total imports.
