In 2022, overseas shipments of peanut butter and prepared or preserved groundnuts were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a mild shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the global exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, peanut butter exports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 14%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the global exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) was the key exporter of peanut butter and prepared or preserved groundnuts, creating 35% of total exports. The Netherlands (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the United States (8.7%), Argentina (5.8%) and India (5.1%). Poland (X tons), Germany (X tons), Canada (X tons), Mexico (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of peanut butter and prepared or preserved groundnuts. At the same time, India (+22.7%), Belgium (+13.9%), Poland (+12.2%), the Netherlands (+5.5%), Mexico (+4.3%) and Canada (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +22.7% from 2012-2022. Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the United States (-1.2%) and Argentina (-16.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the Netherlands, India, Poland and Belgium increased by +6.2, +4.5, +3.1 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest peanut butter supplying countries worldwide were China ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and the United States ($X), together accounting for 55% of global exports. Poland, Germany, India, Canada, Argentina, Mexico and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.
India, with a CAGR of +26.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average peanut butter export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -2.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average export price increased by 14%. The global export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+3.3%), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 10%. Global imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. France (X tons), the United States (X tons), Japan (X tons), Germany (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Canada (X tons) and the UK (X tons) represented roughly 43% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - Poland (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Australia (X tons), Mexico (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) - each recorded a 12% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mexico (with a CAGR of +9.7%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest peanut butter importing markets worldwide were France ($X), the United States ($X) and Japan ($X), together comprising 22% of global imports. Germany, Canada, the UK, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Poland, the United Arab Emirates, Sweden and Australia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Mexico, with a CAGR of +11.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average peanut butter import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 3.6%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+1.4%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
