The global average pineapple yield fell slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, with a decrease of -1.7% on the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the yield increased by 3.5% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha, and then dropped modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, overseas shipments of pineapples decreased by -4.9% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after four years of growth. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pineapple exports fell to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports by Country

Costa Rica prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 63% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the Philippines (X tons), committing a 9.5% share of total exports. The following exporters - the Netherlands (X tons), the United States (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and Honduras (X tons) - together made up 14% of total exports.

Costa Rica experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of pineapples. At the same time, Ecuador (+5.2%) and Honduras (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ecuador emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +5.2% from 2012-2022. The United States experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Philippines (-2.5%) and the Netherlands (-5.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Costa Rica (+5.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of the Philippines (-2.6 p.p.) and the Netherlands (-2.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Costa Rica ($X) remains the largest pineapple supplier worldwide, comprising 47% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Philippines ($X), with a 16% share of global exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 6.4% share.

In Costa Rica, pineapple exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Philippines (+12.6% per year) and the Netherlands (-3.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average pineapple export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -1.9% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 9.1%. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, pineapple imports fell slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 7.9%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

The United States was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 38% of total imports. It was distantly followed by China (X tons), Japan (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Spain (X tons), together making up a 21% share of total imports. The following importers - France (X tons), Italy (X tons), Canada (X tons), Germany (X tons), the UK (X tons), Portugal (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Russia (X tons) - together made up 26% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pineapple imports into the United States stood at +3.0%. At the same time, China (+21.9%), Portugal (+4.4%), France (+3.7%), Russia (+2.1%) and Spain (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +21.9% from 2012-2022. Canada, Italy, Japan and South Korea experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the UK (-2.5%), Germany (-3.4%) and the Netherlands (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the United States and China increased by +6.3 and +5.4 percentage points, respectively.
