For the fourth consecutive year, the global platinum market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -0.8% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the global market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, platinum production shrank slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a noticeable setback. In 2021, Slovakia (X tons), distantly followed by the UK (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) were the key exporters of platinum, together generating 75% of total exports. The Czech Republic (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons), the United States (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), Germany (X tons), Switzerland (X tons) and Spain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Slovakia (with a CAGR of +42.2%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest platinum supplying countries worldwide were South Africa ($X), the UK ($X) and Hong Kong SAR ($X), together accounting for 53% of global exports. These countries were followed by Germany, the United States, Switzerland, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Spain, Slovakia, Denmark and Bulgaria, which together accounted for a further 27%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Denmark, with a CAGR of +11.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average platinum export price amounted to $X per kg, with a decrease of -30.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 27%. The global export price peaked at $X per kg in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per kg), while Slovakia ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to platinum imports into Belgium stood at +11.1%. At the same time, Spain (+38.1%), Denmark (+19.6%), Italy (+12.8%), the United States (+4.8%), Hong Kong SAR (+4.0%), China (+2.9%) and Slovakia (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +38.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Germany (-1.2%), Switzerland (-1.3%), Japan (-3.1%), the UK (-4.5%) and France (-14.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Belgium, Spain and Denmark increased by +12, +6.3 and +5.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest platinum importing markets worldwide were China ($X), the UK ($X) and the United States ($X), with a combined 49% share of global imports. Hong Kong SAR, Japan, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Belgium, France, Spain, Denmark and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Italy, with a CAGR of +8.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average platinum import price stood at $X per kg in 2021, dropping by -13.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per kg in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
