From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by France (with a CAGR of +3.4%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2021, the global average yield of potatoes shrank to X tons per ha, almost unchanged from the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the yield increased by 4.3% against the previous year. In value terms, potato exports stood at $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 38%. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the three major exporters of potatoes, namely France, the Netherlands and Germany, represented more than third of total export. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), making up a 7.2% share of total exports. The United States (X tons), Canada (X tons), Pakistan (X tons), China (X tons), Egypt (X tons), India (X tons), Spain (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Belarus (with a CAGR of +24.2%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), France ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 43% of global exports. These countries were followed by Canada, the United States, China, Belgium, Egypt, Spain, Pakistan, India, Belarus and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 36%.
Belarus, with a CAGR of +27.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average potato export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -1.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average export price increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 35%. Global imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Belgium (X tons), distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons) and Spain (X tons) represented the major importers of potatoes, together comprising 39% of total imports. Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons), Russia (X tons), the United States (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons), Portugal (X tons), France (X tons), Nepal (X tons) and Canada (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +16.3%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest potato importing markets worldwide were Belgium ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Spain ($X), together accounting for 28% of global imports. The United States, Germany, Russia, Italy, France, Canada, Portugal, Uzbekistan and Nepal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.
Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +17.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average potato import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 2.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 21% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
