After four years of growth, overseas shipments of primary cells and batteries decreased by -5.2% to X units in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 126% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, primary cell and battery exports dropped modestly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 7.7% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

China prevails in exports structure, resulting at X units, which was approx. 62% of total exports in 2022. Germany (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 6.5% share, followed by Belgium (5.7%). The following exporters - Hong Kong SAR (X units), Poland (X units), Singapore (X units), Japan (X units), Thailand (X units) and Indonesia (X units) - together made up 17% of total exports.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Germany (+24.6%), Poland (+15.3%), Singapore (+11.2%), Indonesia (+5.4%), Japan (+3.5%) and Thailand (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Germany emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +24.6% from 2012-2022. Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Germany, Poland and Singapore increased by +5.6, +2.6 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest primary cell and battery supplier worldwide, comprising 28% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with a 7.7% share of global exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 7% share.

In China, primary cell and battery exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Singapore (+0.9% per year) and Germany (+11.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average primary cell and battery export price amounted to $X per unit, growing by 4.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 80%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per unit), while China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+3.7%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Primary Cells and Batteries

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of primary cells and batteries, when their volume decreased by -3.5% to X units. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 13%. Global imports peaked at X units in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

In value terms, primary cell and battery imports shrank to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 9.1%. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of primary cell and battery imports in 2022 were the United States (X units), Germany (X units), Hong Kong SAR (X units), Japan (X units), China (X units), Russia (X units), Belgium (X units), Poland (X units), the UK (X units), the Netherlands (X units), Romania (X units) and France (X units), together amounting to 57% of total import. India (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +19.3%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X), Germany ($X) and Hong Kong SAR ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 23% of global imports. China, the UK, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Poland, Japan, Russia, Romania and India lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +13.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average primary cell and battery import price amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 2.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 3.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per unit), while India ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+1.5%), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
