In 2021, the global postcard market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Global consumption peaked at $X in 2016; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Postcard Production
In value terms, postcard production expanded markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a pronounced setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, global production reached the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

After three years of decline, shipments abroad of printed or illustrated postcards and printed cards increased by 5.3% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, postcard exports rose modestly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 14%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the global exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
China prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 72% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), generating a 6.9% share of total exports. The Netherlands (X tons), the UK (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Germany (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
Exports from China decreased at an average annual rate of -3.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+35.3%) and Belgium (+9.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +35.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the UK (-1.1%), Germany (-1.5%), Hong Kong SAR (-4.3%) and the Netherlands (-10.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+6.7 p.p.), Belgium (+1.9 p.p.) and Vietnam (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while the Netherlands saw its share reduced by -3.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest postcard supplier worldwide, comprising 46% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with an 18% share of global exports. It was followed by the UK, with a 6.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+11.4% per year) and the UK (-1.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average postcard export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -3.3% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+24.3%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of printed or illustrated postcards and printed cards, when their volume increased by 37% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Global imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, postcard imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Global imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the United States (X tons) was the key importer of printed or illustrated postcards and printed cards, mixing up 43% of total imports. The UK (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by France (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 24% share of total imports. The following importers - Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Germany (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Canada (X tons), Ireland (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Australia (X tons) - together made up 22% of total imports.
Imports into the United States increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, France (+10.3%), Ireland (+8.5%) and Germany (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, France emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +10.3% from 2012-2021. The Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Belgium (-2.0%), the UK (-4.7%), Canada (-8.1%), Hong Kong SAR (-11.1%) and Australia (-13.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the United States and France increased by +21 and +3.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United States ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported printed or illustrated postcards and printed cards worldwide, comprising 29% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($X), with a 14% share of global imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 9.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United States amounted to -3.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the UK (-2.1% per year) and Germany (+6.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average postcard import price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -11.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average import price increased by 14%. Global import price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+11.0%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
