The global rapeseed oil market expanded notably to $X in 2022, with an increase of 10% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. In 2022, overseas shipments of rapeseed oil decreased by -11.4% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 9.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, rapeseed oil exports rose notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed pronounced growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Canada represented the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 32% of total exports. Germany (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Russia (8.9%), France (6.6%), Belarus (5.6%), the United Arab Emirates (5.2%) and the Netherlands (4.7%). The following exporters - Belgium (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Australia (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and Poland (X tons) - together made up 12% of total exports.

Canada experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of rapeseed oil. At the same time, Belarus (+17.5%), Russia (+14.4%), France (+6.5%), Australia (+6.2%), Denmark (+5.1%), the United Arab Emirates (+4.9%), Germany (+2.6%) and Belgium (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +17.5% from 2012-2022. The Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Poland (-2.4%) and the Czech Republic (-4.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Russia (+6.1 p.p.), Belarus (+4.2 p.p.) and France (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Canada saw its share reduced by -1.6%, -2.2% and -7.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Canada ($X) remains the largest rapeseed oil supplier worldwide, comprising 35% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 13% share of global exports. It was followed by France, with a 6.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Canada amounted to +3.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+5.5% per year) and France (+9.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average rapeseed oil export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 26% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, rapeseed oil export price increased by +93.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of rapeseed oil, when their volume decreased by -11.4% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 12%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, rapeseed oil imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 60%. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United States (X tons), distantly followed by China (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Norway (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main importers of rapeseed oil, together achieving 67% of total imports. Poland (X tons), France (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Lithuania (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Russia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +46.5%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported rapeseed oil worldwide, comprising 29% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 13% share of global imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with an 8.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United States totaled +8.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+1.6% per year) and the Netherlands (+4.9% per year).

In 2022, the average rapeseed oil import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 28% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, rapeseed oil import price increased by +92.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 43% against the previous year. Global import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
