The global average paddy rice yield dropped modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, paddy rice exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. The global exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
In 2022, the United States (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) represented the largest exporters of paddy ricearound the world, together amounting to near 61% of total exports. It was distantly followed by India (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons), together generating a 24% share of total exports. Paraguay (X tons), Myanmar (X tons) and Russia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +81.9%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X), Brazil ($X) and India ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 70% of global exports. Uruguay, Paraguay, Russia and Myanmar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.
Myanmar, with a CAGR of +64.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average paddy rice export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 5.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 6.7%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 48%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of global imports remained at a lower figure.

Costa Rica (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 6.4% share, followed by Colombia (6.2%), Honduras (5.7%) and Guatemala (5.6%). Nicaragua (X tons), El Salvador (X tons), Libya (X tons), Panama (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Yemen (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Panama (with a CAGR of +215.0%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest paddy rice importing markets worldwide were Mexico ($X), Nepal ($X) and Venezuela ($X), together accounting for 35% of global imports. Guatemala, Colombia, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Panama, Yemen, Libya and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 36%.
Among the main importing countries, Panama, with a CAGR of +192.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average paddy rice import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 10%. Global import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
