The global semiconductor device market rose modestly to $X in 2021, surging by 4.8% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a deep contraction. Global consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, semiconductor device production declined slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 9.7%. Over the period under review, global production hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, the amount of semiconductor devices exported worldwide skyrocketed to X units, with an increase of 17% on 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt decrease. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, semiconductor device exports reached $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 20%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the global exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

China represented the main exporter of semiconductor devices in the world, with the volume of exports resulting at X units, which was approx. 38% of total exports in 2021. The Philippines (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the United States (X units) and Germany (X units). All these countries together took approx. 30% share of total exports. The following exporters - Mexico (X units), Singapore (X units), Thailand (X units), Malaysia (X units), Australia (X units), South Korea (X units), the UK (X units) and Israel (X units) - together made up 23% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to semiconductor device exports from China stood at +2.8%. At the same time, Thailand (+53.0%), Australia (+36.3%), South Korea (+28.9%), Israel (+17.6%), Mexico (+9.2%), the UK (+5.7%), Germany (+5.3%) and Malaysia (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +53.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Singapore (-3.1%), the United States (-5.5%) and the Philippines (-12.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China, Germany, Mexico, Thailand, Australia, South Korea, Malaysia and Israel increased by +21, +3.7, +3.1, +3, +2.6, +1.9, +1.8 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the largest semiconductor device supplier worldwide, comprising 34% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with an 11% share of global exports. It was followed by the Philippines, with an 11% share.

In the United States, semiconductor device exports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China (-3.8% per year) and the Philippines (-10.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average semiconductor device export price amounted to $X per unit, declining by -2.2% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average export price increased by 21%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then fell in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per unit), while Australia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+13.2%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Semiconductor Device Imports

Imports

Global semiconductor device imports skyrocketed to X units in 2021, growing by 46% compared with 2020 figures. In general, imports, however, saw a sharp descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 296%. Global imports peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, semiconductor device imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The Philippines was the key importer of semiconductor devices in the world, with the volume of imports reaching X units, which was approx. 43% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Spain (X units) and Hong Kong SAR (X units), together comprising a 12% share of total imports. The following importers - Mexico (X units), the United States (X units), Thailand (X units), Indonesia (X units), Singapore (X units), Italy (X units), Nigeria (X units), South Korea (X units), Malaysia (X units) and China (X units) - together made up 31% of total imports.

The Philippines was also the fastest-growing in terms of the semiconductor devices imports, with a CAGR of +53.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nigeria (+32.1%), Thailand (+25.3%), Spain (+18.6%), Indonesia (+12.4%), South Korea (+8.5%), Singapore (+4.3%), China (+2.5%), Malaysia (+1.4%) and the United States (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-6.5%), Italy (-9.2%) and Mexico (-10.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Philippines (+43 p.p.), Spain (+6.6 p.p.), Hong Kong SAR (+4.8 p.p.), the United States (+4 p.p.), Thailand (+3.9 p.p.), Mexico (+3.8 p.p.), Indonesia (+3.3 p.p.), Singapore (+3 p.p.), Nigeria (+2.8 p.p.), Italy (+2.6 p.p.), South Korea (+2.6 p.p.), Malaysia (+2.3 p.p.) and China (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($X), China ($X) and Singapore ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 47% of global imports. These countries were followed by the Philippines, South Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong SAR, Mexico, Indonesia, Thailand, Italy, Spain and Nigeria, which together accounted for a further 32%.

Among the main importing countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +22.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average semiconductor device import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, shrinking by -9.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 4,812%. Global import price peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per unit), while Nigeria (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
