Over the period under review, the total production indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +32.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 47%. In value terms, semiconductor LED exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Thailand was the main exporting country with an export of around X units, which recorded 57% of total exports. It was distantly followed by China (X units), generating a 34% share of total exports. The following exporters - the Netherlands (X units) and Japan (X units) - together made up 4.3% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Thailand (with a CAGR of +132.8%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest semiconductor LED supplier worldwide, comprising 46% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 6.8% share of global exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in China totaled +7.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+15.2% per year) and Japan (-4.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average semiconductor LED export price amounted to $X per unit, waning by -2.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 3% against the previous year. The global export price peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per unit), while China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (-3.6%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

For the fifth consecutive year, the global market recorded growth in purchases abroad of semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs), which increased by 26% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 144%. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, semiconductor LED imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Thailand (X units) was the major importer of semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs), committing 48% of total imports. The Netherlands (X units) held an 8.8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by India (5.1%) and Brazil (4.8%). Japan (X units), Spain (X units), Hong Kong SAR (X units), Germany (X units) and Australia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Thailand increased at an average annual rate of +75.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Brazil (+90.8%), Hong Kong SAR (+38.5%), India (+32.7%), the Netherlands (+25.3%), Spain (+22.0%), Australia (+12.4%) and Japan (+11.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +90.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Germany (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Thailand (+46 p.p.), Brazil (+4.8 p.p.), India (+3.1 p.p.), the Netherlands (+2.9 p.p.) and Hong Kong SAR (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while Australia, Japan and Germany saw its share reduced by -1.8%, -3.3% and -19.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and India ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 22% of global imports. These countries were followed by Germany, Japan, Brazil, Spain and Australia, which together accounted for a further 18%.
Brazil, with a CAGR of +38.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average semiconductor LED import price amounted to $X per unit, rising by 2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 75% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
