China (X tons) and Luxembourg (X tons) represented the key exporters of sheet piling, shapes and sections (of iron or steel) in 2021, accounting for approx. 32% and 24% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X tons), Japan (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Poland (X tons), together achieving a 24% share of total exports. The Netherlands, Poland, Japan, the United Arab Emirates and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.

Among the main exporting countries, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +30.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average sheet piling export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Japan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-1.4%), the Netherlands (-2.2%), the United States (-2.8%), China (-8.3%) and Canada (-12.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Philippines (+18 p.p.), Bangladesh (+6 p.p.), Germany (+2.5 p.p.), Ireland (+2.4 p.p.), Vietnam (+2.2 p.p.) and Belgium (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2021, the share of the United States (-1.7 p.p.), the Netherlands (-2.7 p.p.), China (-2.8 p.p.) and Canada (-7.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest sheet piling importing markets worldwide were the Philippines ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 30% share of global imports. These countries were followed by the UK, Hong Kong SAR, the United States, France, Vietnam, Canada, Bangladesh, Belgium, China and Ireland, which together accounted for a further 33%.

Among the main importing countries, Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +49.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average sheet piling import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a mild decrease. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
