The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. The global exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut exports totaled $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Turkey (X tons) represented the main exporter of shelled hazelnuts, mixing up 60% of total exports. Italy (X tons) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Azerbaijan (6.5%), Chile (6.1%) and Georgia (5.7%). Germany (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Turkey experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of shelled hazelnuts. At the same time, Chile (+75.8%), Italy (+11.7%), Azerbaijan (+6.7%), Germany (+2.3%) and Georgia (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +75.8% from 2012-2021. While the share of Italy (+7.1 p.p.), Chile (+6 p.p.) and Azerbaijan (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2021, the share of Turkey (-14.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest shelled hazelnut supplier worldwide, comprising 57% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 17% share of global exports. It was followed by Chile, with a 7.5% share.

In Turkey, shelled hazelnut exports increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Italy (+14.5% per year) and Chile (+76.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average shelled hazelnut export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 3.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, shelled hazelnut export price increased by +16.7% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 45% against the previous year. The global export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Georgia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, overseas purchases of shelled hazelnuts increased by 4.1% to X tons, rising for the sixth consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut imports totaled $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of global imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Germany (X tons) and Italy (X tons) represented roughly 48% of total imports in 2021. France (X tons) took an 8.2% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Russia (4.6%). Canada (X tons), Switzerland (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Poland (X tons), Spain (X tons), Egypt (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and China (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +25.8%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and France ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 57% of global imports. These countries were followed by Russia, Canada, Poland, Switzerland, Brazil, China, Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands and Egypt, which together accounted for a further 27%.

In terms of the main importing countries, China, with a CAGR of +31.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average shelled hazelnut import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately equating the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 29%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
