After three years of growth, the global shipping market decreased by -6.8% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption showed a buoyant increase. Over the period under review, the global market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
Shipping Production
In value terms, shipping production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 164% against the previous year. Global production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of ships, vessels, ferry-boats for the transport of persons, when their volume increased by 244% to X units. In general, exports, however, recorded a deep setback. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the maximum at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, shipping exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 39%. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Italy represented the major exporter of ships, vessels, ferry-boats for the transport of persons in the world, with the volume of exports reaching X units, which was near 46% of total exports in 2021. Norway (X units) held a 7.3% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Spain (7%) and South Africa (4.7%). The following exporters - India (X units), Kazakhstan (X units), Turkey (X units), China (X units), Bangladesh (X units), Sweden (X units), Nigeria (X units), the Netherlands (X units) and Denmark (X units) - together made up 23% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to shipping exports from Italy stood at +86.6%. At the same time, Spain (+109.9%), Kazakhstan (+78.7%), Norway (+59.9%), Denmark (+52.4%), Turkey (+45.7%), Bangladesh (+42.7%), South Africa (+9.6%) and the Netherlands (+7.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +109.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, India (-5.3%), Sweden (-11.4%), China (-17.4%) and Nigeria (-24.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Italy (+46 p.p.), Norway (+7.3 p.p.), Spain (+7 p.p.), South Africa (+3.6 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+3.3 p.p.), Turkey (+2.8 p.p.), Bangladesh (+2.6 p.p.) and Denmark (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while China and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -5.6% and -11% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the largest shipping supplier worldwide, comprising 27% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Norway ($X), with an 8.6% share of global exports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 3.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Italy amounted to +10.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Norway (+47.1% per year) and Turkey (+65.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average shipping export price amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -62.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 374% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then fell rapidly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per unit), while Kazakhstan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+43.6%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of ships, vessels, ferry-boats for the transport of persons were finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2012, thus ending a eight-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. Over the period under review, global imports attained the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, shipping imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, global imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of shipping imports in 2021 were Bermuda (X units), together amounting to 99% of total import.
Bermuda was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ships, vessels, ferry-boats for the transport of persons imports, with a CAGR of -6.8% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest importers remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Bermuda ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ships, vessels, ferry-boats for the transport of persons worldwide.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Bermuda totaled -12.0%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average shipping import price amounted to $X per unit, falling by -27.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 84%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2020 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Bermuda.
From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Bermuda amounted to -5.6% per year.
