Sulphites Market Size

In 2022, the global sulphites market increased by 4% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 4.8% against the previous year. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the global market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sulphites production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the production volume increased by 10% against the previous year. Global production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of sulphites increased by 4.4% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +19.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 32%. The global exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, sulphites exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a prominent expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

China represented the largest exporter of sulphites in the world, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 45% of total exports in 2022. Italy (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Thailand (9%), India (7.1%), the United States (7%) and Turkey (5.1%). Belgium (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +10.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, India (+15.2%), Turkey (+8.1%), the United States (+4.4%), Thailand (+4.4%) and Italy (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +15.2% from 2012-2022. Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of China (+15 p.p.) and India (+4.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of Belgium (-1.9 p.p.) and Italy (-3.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest sulphites supplier worldwide, comprising 38% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with a 19% share of global exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China amounted to +12.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+8.0% per year) and Thailand (+6.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average sulphites export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 28% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+4.8%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Global sulphites imports totaled X tons in 2022, with an increase of 7.4% against the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of global imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sulphites imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +37.9% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the four major importers of sulphites, namely France, the United States, South Africa and Mexico, represented more than fourth of total import. Australia (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Canada (X tons), Spain (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Ecuador (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ecuador (with a CAGR of +13.6%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X), Mexico ($X) and the United States ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 19% share of global imports. Brazil, Canada, South Africa, Australia, Spain, the Netherlands, Ecuador, the Philippines, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

Among the main importing countries, Ecuador, with a CAGR of +12.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average sulphites import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
