It was distantly followed by South Korea (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and China (X tons), together committing a 34% share of total exports. Canada (X tons), Mexico (X tons), Germany (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to sulphuric acid exports from Japan stood at +15.3%. At the same time, China (+48.1%), Bulgaria (+13.8%), Mexico (+4.2%), Sweden (+3.3%), South Korea (+2.2%) and Belgium (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +48.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Canada (-1.1%) and Germany (-4.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Japan (+20 p.p.), China (+7.7 p.p.) and Bulgaria (+3.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of Mexico (-1.6 p.p.), Germany (-4.5 p.p.), Canada (-5.7 p.p.) and South Korea (-12.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X), Japan ($X) and Canada ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 38% share of global exports.

China, with a CAGR of +54.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average sulphuric acid export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 34% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Japan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, approx. X tons of sulphuric acid and oleum were imported worldwide; growing by 53% compared with 2021. Overall, imports posted a prominent expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sulphuric acid imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a resilient increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The purchases of the three major importers of sulphuric acid and oleum, namely Chile, the United States and Morocco, represented more than half of total import. The Philippines (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 8.1% share, followed by India (5.7%) and Turkey (5.6%). Brazil (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The Philippines, Morocco, Brazil, Turkey, Thailand, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Germany and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

In 2022, the average sulphuric acid import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 12% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 16%. Global import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
