As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, sunflower seed exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +117.8% against 2015 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, Ukraine (X tons) represented the key exporter of sunflower seed, constituting 34% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Romania (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), France (X tons), China (X tons) and Moldova (X tons), together comprising a 45% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +25.6%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest sunflower seed supplying countries worldwide were Ukraine ($X), Romania ($X) and Bulgaria ($X), with a combined 47% share of global exports.

In 2022, global sunflower seed imports soared to X tons, increasing by 42% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate strong growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, sunflower seed imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +126.0% against 2015 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
China (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) represented the key importers of sunflower seed in 2022, resulting at approx. 19% and 14% of total imports, respectively. Turkey (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 8.6% share, followed by Hungary (7.5%), Romania (6.8%), the Netherlands (6.6%) and Spain (5.9%). From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +90.3%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Bulgaria ($X), Turkey ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 30% of global imports.
Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +34.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average sunflower seed import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 13% against the previous year. Global import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
