The third position in this ranking was taken by Tanzania (X tons), with a 4.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume in China stood at -1.9%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Malawi (+7.2% per year) and Tanzania (+3.7% per year).
In 2021, the global average sweet potato yield amounted to X tons per ha, leveling off at 2020. Overall, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 2%. The global yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2021, approx. X ha of sweet potatoes were harvested worldwide; remaining constant against 2020 figures. Overall, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Exports by Country
In 2021, the United States (X tons), distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Canada (X tons) were the major exporters of sweet potatoes, together constituting 76% of total exports. Vietnam (X tons), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), China (X tons), Portugal (X tons) and Peru (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Portugal (with a CAGR of +66.7%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Egypt ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 61% of global exports. These countries were followed by Spain, Vietnam, Canada, Portugal, China, Lao People's Democratic Republic and Peru, which together accounted for a further 24%.
Portugal, with a CAGR of +68.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average sweet potato export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 3.5%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+3.7%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sweet Potato Imports

In 2021, supplies from abroad of sweet potatoes decreased by -8.2% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after eight years of growth. Overall, imports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 51%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of global imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sweet potato imports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main importers of sweet potatoesin the world, together recording near 42% of total imports. Canada (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 9.9% share, followed by France (6.3%), Belgium (5.7%), Germany (5.6%) and the United States (5%). Thailand (X tons), Italy (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Japan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +44.1%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), the UK ($X) and Canada ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 48% share of global imports. These countries were followed by Germany, France, Belgium, Thailand, the United States, Japan, Spain, Malaysia and Italy, which together accounted for a further 35%.
Belgium, with a CAGR of +39.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average sweet potato import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 18%. Global import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+7.7%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
