In value terms, asphalted paper exports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

The United States (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) represented the key exporters of tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard in 2022, reaching near 30% and 28% of total exports, respectively. Canada (X tons) held a 9.8% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Italy (9.2%). Malaysia (X tons), Russia (X tons), Germany (X tons), Mexico (X tons) and Spain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Over the period under review, global imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Germany (X tons) was the key importer of tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard, generating 30% of total imports. Canada (X tons), France (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Poland (X tons), Cambodia (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Germany decreased at an average annual rate of -2.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Myanmar (+33.2%), Cambodia (+21.8%), Egypt (+11.7%), Poland (+11.5%), Thailand (+1.5%) and France (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +33.2% from 2012-2022. Denmark experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Canada (-2.6%), Sweden (-6.9%), Belgium (-8.1%), the Netherlands (-15.5%) and the United States (-17.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Myanmar, Germany, Egypt, France and Cambodia increased by +12, +8.8, +4.3, +2 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest asphalted paper importing markets worldwide were Germany ($X), Thailand ($X) and Egypt ($X), with a combined 25% share of global imports. France, the United States, Canada, Belgium, Myanmar, Poland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark and Cambodia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.

Among the main importing countries, Cambodia, with a CAGR of +20.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average asphalted paper import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -17.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern.
