The global wallpaper market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 9.9% against the previous year. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the global market failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wallpaper production rose modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, global production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the amount of wallpaper and wall coverings exported worldwide totaled X tons, surging by 7.1% compared with the previous year. In general, exports, however, showed a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 11%. The global exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

China was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 38% of total exports. Germany (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Russia (9.4%), Ukraine (6.5%), Belgium (5.5%) and Belarus (4.8%). South Korea (X tons), Italy (X tons), the UK (X tons), France (X tons), Latvia (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to wallpaper exports from China stood at +12.1%. At the same time, Latvia (+21.2%), Russia (+19.0%), Turkey (+8.1%) and Belgium (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Latvia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +21.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the Netherlands (-1.5%), France (-3.0%), the UK (-3.7%), Belarus (-4.6%), Germany (-6.5%), South Korea (-7.7%), Italy (-13.4%) and Ukraine (-14.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China, Russia, Belgium and Latvia increased by +27, +7.7, +1.9 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest wallpaper supplier worldwide, comprising 28% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 12% share of global exports. It was followed by Russia, with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China amounted to +10.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (-7.5% per year) and Russia (+18.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average wallpaper export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (+4.5%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 12%. Global imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wallpaper imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a perceptible reduction. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons), followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), the UK (X tons), France (X tons) and India (X tons) represented the major importers of wallpaper and wall coverings, together making up 36% of total imports. Uzbekistan (X tons), Iran (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Azerbaijan (X tons), Latvia (X tons), the United States (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for India (with a CAGR of +22.4%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest wallpaper importing markets worldwide were Russia ($X), France ($X) and the United States ($X), together accounting for 24% of global imports. These countries were followed by Kazakhstan, the UK, the United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, the Netherlands, India, Azerbaijan, Iran, Latvia and Kyrgyzstan, which together accounted for a further 33%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Azerbaijan, with a CAGR of +28.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average wallpaper import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 12% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
