Watch Market Size

The global watch market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced descent. Global consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Watch Production

In value terms, watch production fell slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 5.7%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, global production growth failed to regain momentum.

Watch Exports

Exports

Global watch exports skyrocketed to X units in 2021, jumping by 17% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 147% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, watch exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, China (X units) represented the main exporter of watches, constituting 61% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Hong Kong SAR (X units), achieving a 23% share of total exports. The following exporters - Switzerland (X units), Thailand (X units) and Germany (X units) - each accounted for a 6.3% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to watch exports from China stood at -5.0%. At the same time, Thailand (+7.9%) and Germany (+6.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +7.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Switzerland (-6.5%) and Hong Kong SAR (-8.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2021, the share of Hong Kong SAR (-8.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Switzerland ($X) remains the largest watch supplier worldwide, comprising 53% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 13% share of global exports. It was followed by China, with a 4.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Switzerland was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hong Kong SAR (-1.5% per year) and China (+0.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average watch export price amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 12% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 148% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per unit), while China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+27.8%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Watch Imports

In 2021, supplies from abroad of watches increased by 15% to X units for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a deep slump. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, watch imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the United States (X units), distantly followed by Hong Kong SAR (X units) represented the main importers of watches, together generating 44% of total imports. The following importers - Paraguay (X units), Germany (X units), the United Arab Emirates (X units), France (X units), Japan (X units), Saudi Arabia (X units), India (X units), El Salvador (X units), the Netherlands (X units), Indonesia (X units) and China (X units) - together made up 28% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +49.0%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X), the United States ($X) and China ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 38% share of global imports. These countries were followed by France, Japan, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, India, Indonesia, Paraguay and El Salvador, which together accounted for a further 22%.

Among the main importing countries, Indonesia, with a CAGR of +29.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average watch import price amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 22%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per unit), while El Salvador ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
