In general, the total consumption indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +60.3% against 2014 indices. Global consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.
Wheat Starch Production
In value terms, wheat starch production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +58.5% against 2014 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of wheat starch, when their volume increased by 12% to X tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the global exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wheat starch exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The global exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Lithuania (X tons), Germany (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Australia (X tons), France (X tons) and Poland (X tons), together resulting at 79% of total export. The following exporters - Hungary (X tons), Italy (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) - together made up 15% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +170.9%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest wheat starch supplying countries worldwide were Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Lithuania ($X), with a combined 49% share of global exports. These countries were followed by Australia, France, Poland, Italy, Hungary, Singapore, Sweden and Argentina, which together accounted for a further 43%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Hungary, with a CAGR of +140.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average wheat starch export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible slump. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in the Netherlands ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton), while Lithuania ($X per ton) and Hungary ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+1.9%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, approx. X tons of wheat starch were imported worldwide; increasing by 15% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +66.5% against 2012 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, wheat starch imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), Poland (X tons), France (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Finland (X tons) were the main importers of wheat starch, together achieving 64% of total imports. Italy (X tons), the United States (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to wheat starch imports into Germany stood at +9.2%. At the same time, South Korea (+74.4%), Italy (+19.7%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+19.2%), the United States (+16.3%), Poland (+15.8%), Indonesia (+9.5%), Finland (+8.9%) and France (+6.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Korea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +74.4% from 2012-2021. The Netherlands and Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the UK (-2.0%) and Singapore (-2.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Germany (+6 p.p.), Poland (+5.3 p.p.), Italy (+3 p.p.), the United States (+1.9 p.p.) and South Korea (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while Belgium, Singapore, the UK and the Netherlands saw its share reduced by -1.7%, -2.4%, -5.8% and -6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wheat starch worldwide, comprising 23% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 10% share of global imports. It was followed by France, with a 9% share.
In Germany, wheat starch imports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (-0.2% per year) and France (+5.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average wheat starch import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 12%. Global import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
