The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +95.6% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs at X units in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.
In value terms, women knitwear exports expanded to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 37%. The global exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
In 2022, China (X units) was the largest exporter of women's or girls' clothing (knitted or crocheted), achieving 43% of total exports. Bangladesh (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Vietnam (X units) and Cambodia (X units). All these countries together took near 30% share of total exports. Germany (X units), Turkey (X units), Spain (X units), India (X units) and Indonesia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from China decreased at an average annual rate of -2.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Germany (+32.3%), Bangladesh (+30.8%), Indonesia (+17.2%), Vietnam (+10.8%), Spain (+10.1%), Cambodia (+8.1%), India (+4.4%) and Turkey (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Germany emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +32.3% from 2012-2022. While the share of Bangladesh (+17 p.p.), Vietnam (+3.7 p.p.), Germany (+2.7 p.p.) and Cambodia (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of China (-29.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest women knitwear supplier worldwide, comprising 34% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bangladesh ($X), with a 12% share of global exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with an 8.5% share.
In China, women knitwear exports shrank by an average annual rate of -3.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bangladesh (+29.9% per year) and Vietnam (+12.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average women knitwear export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, rising by 4.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 25%. The global export price peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while Bangladesh ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cambodia (+1.7%), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 27%. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
In value terms, women knitwear imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In 2022, the United States (X units), distantly followed by Germany (X units), the UK (X units), Spain (X units) and France (X units) were the key importers of women's or girls' clothing (knitted or crocheted), together mixing up 52% of total imports. Poland (X units), the United Arab Emirates (X units), the Netherlands (X units), Japan (X units), Italy (X units), Canada (X units), Vietnam (X units) and Australia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into the United States increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Germany (+38.1%), Japan (+21.1%), Poland (+17.6%), Spain (+10.9%), Italy (+7.5%), the Netherlands (+7.1%), France (+6.8%), Canada (+5.3%), the UK (+4.0%) and Australia (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Germany emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +38.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-2.9%) and Vietnam (-11.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Germany (+10 p.p.), Poland (+2.4 p.p.), Spain (+2.2 p.p.) and Japan (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while the United Arab Emirates, the United States and Vietnam saw its share reduced by -3.2%, -4.4% and -6.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest women knitwear importing markets worldwide were the United States ($X), Germany ($X) and the UK ($X), with a combined 37% share of global imports. France, Spain, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Italy, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, Australia and Vietnam lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.
Poland, with a CAGR of +18.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average women knitwear import price amounted to $X per unit, surging by 4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a slight decline. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
