Over the period under review, the global exports reached the peak figure at X cubic meters in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wood fuel exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +77.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 46%. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Swaziland (X cubic meters), Latvia (X cubic meters), Croatia (X cubic meters), France (X cubic meters), Bosnia and Herzegovina (X cubic meters) and South Africa (X cubic meters) represented roughly 57% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Ukraine (X cubic meters), creating a 4.5% share of total exports. Lithuania (X cubic meters), Slovenia (X cubic meters), Estonia (X cubic meters), Germany (X cubic meters), Spain (X cubic meters) and Poland (X cubic meters) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for South Africa (with a CAGR of +19.1%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Latvia ($X), Croatia ($X) and Lithuania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 36% of global exports. Bosnia and Herzegovina, Poland, Swaziland, Ukraine, Estonia, France, Slovenia, South Africa, Germany and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, South Africa, with a CAGR of +21.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average wood fuel export price stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, surging by 19% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, wood fuel export price increased by +93.6% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, global imports reached the peak figure at X cubic meters in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wood fuel imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +58.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X cubic meters), distantly followed by Swaziland (X cubic meters), Italy (X cubic meters), Germany (X cubic meters), Sweden (X cubic meters) and the UK (X cubic meters) were the key importers of wood fuel, together achieving 52% of total imports. Overall, import price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade.
